Identity Theft

Identity Theft is the most common complaint filed with the FTC. If a criminal gets a hold of your personal information (mainly your SSN), then they are able to open up multiple credit accounts and rack up thousands of dollars on YOUR credit. Identity Theft is not fun.

Usually the crooks target unsuspecting people like you when they run an Identity Theft ring. Anyone with a 750+ FICA score is a prime target because thieves can produce your information with a fake ID card and get instant credit to buy big ticket items such as big screen televisions and home appliances.

Identity theft is an epidemic in this country, especially with so much commerce occurring online. All it takes is for a criminal to get hold of your information and they can do almost anything in your name. And the scariest part is that often these people reside in foreign countries, where the laws are much more lax. They can do international purchases using your identity information, and it's very difficult (if not impossible) to track them down. The only recourse is to make sure you're protected and to act quickly when you find out that you're a victim.

When you think you are a victim of Identity Theft, the first thing you should do is inform all 3 credit bureaus, then complete an Identity Theft police report with your local police. Another important step to take would be contacting the FCC and filling out their Identity Theft form.
